Native Americans manufactured their own bridles out of rawhide, tanned leather, and coiled or woven horsehair or buffalo hair. They would sometimes use a steel bit on the bridle, but they preferred to use a thin rawhide thong or a braided buffalo hair rope looped over the lower jaw to direct their animals.
